That sometimes happens if liquid gets in the barrel of the refill during shipping. I use a paper towel sometimes and place it over the refill for the first drag or two. But if it persists or is more serious than that you might contact the company as something sounds defective. I agree that you don't want to be taking liquid into your mouth directly.
